How to Sprout from Seeds
- 1). Select seeds for sprouting. Place 2 to 3 tbsp. of the seeds on a baking sheet, spreading them out for inspection. Remove all seeds that look withered or are broken. Place all the seeds that pass the inspection in a strainer.
- 2). Rinse the selected seeds well.
- 3). Soak the seeds. Place all the seeds in a jar, and cover the seeds with bottled or filtered water. The water level should be 2 to 3 inches above the seeds. Allow the seeds to soak for eight to 12 hours.
- 4). Create a filter. Place a piece of cheesecloth over the mouth of the jar, and secure it tightly with a rubber band.
- 5). Drain the water. Turn the jar upside down over a sink or bowl, and shake the jar gently until all the water drains.
- 6). Rinse the seeds. Fill the jar about halfway with water, and then again turn it upside down to rinse the seeds. Leave no water standing or the seeds may rot.
- 7). Create seed-sprouting conditions. Place the jar upside down in a shallow pan or dish. Tilt it against a wall or other structure so that water can drain while keeping the cheesecloth unblocked for air circulation. The jar should be kept in a cool, dark location. Inside a cabinet or in a cupboard shelf is ideal.
- 8). Rinse the seeds twice daily. The seeds need to be rinsed often to prevent mold from forming. Drain the jar completely after filling it with water. After draining, return the jar to its tilted position in a cool, dark location.
- 9). Inspect the seeds daily for growth when you rinse them. Seeds are ready when green leaves sprout, usually after about five days. Sprouted seeds should be rinsed in a strainer before use.
