How to Eliminate Odors When Shipping Food

10
    • 1). Place the food in a sealed container or air vacuumed packaging before shipping. Sealing air out of the food's packaging lessens the chance of condensation forming if the package experiences high temperatures during transit. This will slow the food's deterioration process and ensure the food arrives fresh and odor-free upon arrival.

    • 2). Stuff the shipping box or envelope with newspaper, a vented plastic bag full of baking soda or coffee beans, or fabric softener sheets. These materials will absorb any moisture that forms around the packaging. Moisture could give rise to bacterial growth, which begins the deterioration process of the food and causes odors to form.

    • 3). Ship the food with dry ice stored in a small breathable container. This keeps your food cold and prevents it from deteriorating and developing an odor during shipping. Dry ice is a frozen form of carbon dioxide that reaches -110 degrees Fahrenheit. It works well for shipping because it melts more slowly than regular ice, but there are a few precautions you must take and regulations to comply with before using dry ice. You must put the food in a plastic container durable enough to withstand the temperature of dry ice without breaking. The container you use to hold the dry ice must be gas permeable and allow carbon dioxide gas to release as the dry ice slowly melts. Lastly, you must label the outermost shipping box with a Class 9 UN 1845 hazard label that contains the weight of the dry ice in kilograms. This label will notify the package carrier as well as the recipient that the package contains dry ice.
