    Resources in New York State

    • 1). The New York Council for the Humanities, nyhumanities.org/grants, offers grant money to nonprofit organizations in New York state for public programming such as lectures, exhibit planning, online exhibits, exhibit catalogs, and docent scripts. Grants range from $2,500 to $20,000.

    • 2). New York State Council on the Arts (NYSCA) Museum Program is an agency of the state of New York dedicated to preserving the heritage and cultural resources of New York. NYSCA offers grants for general operating support, general program support, special projects, exhibition, museum education, collection care and research, institutional development and professional development.     • 3). The Greater Hudson Heritage Network Conservation Treatment Grant Program provides funding for stabilizing and preserving paintings, sculpture, textiles, furniture, frames, historical, ethnographic and decorative objects in a museum and historical society collections by professional conservators. These grants are only open to museums and historical societies that do not have a professional conservator on staff. Individual grants are available up to $7,500.

    • 4). The Documentary Heritage Program (DHP) is a statewide records management grant program that seeks to discover, process, catalog and make accessible cultural heritage documents in New York.     • 5). Museums in New York can apply for a Get Ready! grant from the Upstate History Alliance Grants for Museum Advancement to hire a consultant to assist with putting together a strategic plan and mission for their institution. A Get Set! grant is available to institutions that would like to hire a consultant to help them advance their strategic plan in general operations including exhibition, development, collection management, conservation, education, technology or marketing. A Go! Grant is available to cover travel expenses for museum employees to travel in-state to view exhibits and attend conferences and workshops.     Resources Outside of New York

    • 1). The Institute of Museum and Library Services (IMLS) is a federal agency that offers grants for collection management, community engagement, conservation, digital collections, education, partnerships, professional development, public programs and research.     • 2). The American Association for State and Local History (AASLH), aaslh.org, is an organization dedicated to offering a wealth of resources to local history focused museums.

    • 3). A third resource outside New York is the American Association of Museums, aam-us.org, which is the go-to place for all things museums in North America. While they offer few grant or scholarship resources themselves, they will help point your institution in the right direction.
