Green Living Choices Are Choices We Can Make in Our Own Homes
Green Living Choices are choices we can make in our own Homes.
The four most important things we can do or choices we can make are: o Reduce our consumption o Make careful choices o Use renewable resources o Repair and re-use whenever possible And each one of these choices we make or actions we take, contribute to conserving our planets resources.
It is hoped that the items mentioned in this series of articles will help in reducing consumption of things like the packaged goods we buy to the energy we use.
We all have the freedom to make choices on the things we have control of and, our own home is the perfect place to start making these green living choices.
There are two areas where our green living choices can really make a difference and they are energy efficiency and water conservation.
Think about it for a minute, when you turn on the water faucet, the water has to come from somewhere and it has to be treated before you can use it, then it has to be pumped to your location and then processed again if it becomes waste water.
So, if we make the green living choice to conserve water, we save not only the water but the cost to treat, then to pump it, then to process the potential waste.
This ultimately comes down to a savings on our utility bill.
The choice is really easy, like taking a shorter shower or bath, watering the lawn a few less times, remembering to turn off the light when we leave a room, moving the thermostat up a few degrees in the summer and down a few degrees in the winter.
It may sound a little silly, but by doing some of these things, we actually saw a reduction in our utility bill! My wife and I plan to move to the Texas hill country when we retire and there try to practice what we preach.
Our land is completely unimproved and provides the perfect blank canvas for us to practice on.
We plan to drill our own well and power the pump with a solar panel and battery.
Our septic system will divert Grey water (from baths, washing and kitchen sinks) to water the garden, fruit trees and lawn.
Our gate opener will be solar powered.
Our heat will be in the form of a wood burning stove.
We intend to build a root cellar where all our home canned goods will be stored at a consistent 50 some odd degrees.
Reducing consumption can really help.
If we all did just a small part, that would be an immense savings for the planet.
Making careful choices will also help to send a message to those companies that do not subscribe to the green living way of life.
If we examine each package of the items we purchase and find that the company is not "living green", we do not purchase from them.
We can also let them know of our choice by way of e-mail or letter and also make them aware we plan to advise our friends and family of our choice and why.
Do you think that will send a message? Many businesses are doing just that.
Adjusting the way they do business and produce products to appeal to a certain market share.
For those that have not started to care about green living, it won't matter.
But for those that do care, they will be in the right place to get their business.
So, the choices we make are important.
And they send a message to all those around us that one person or one family can make a difference by living green!
