Safety Tips When Using a Crib
Parents, for the safety of their child, are encouraged to put their newborn into their own beds, at sleeping time and to this end, the use of cribs have increased in popularity.
Therefore, in order to keep the baby safe throughout his/her usage of it, there are some safety steps that we can take and some of them are: Instructions Always follow the manufacturer's instructions concerning the assembling of the crib and this also includes whatever other tips they may offer.
You may think that this is a no brainier, but you will be surprised by how many of us ignore the printed instructions and try to assemble the product by using only our common sense.
If the instructions are too complicated to follow, it will be best to seek out someone who will be able to understand them and get it assembled correctly.
However, if the crib comes to you assembled, before allowing the baby to use it, make sure that it is safe.
That is, check to make sure that it is leveled, that it is not missing any screws and overall, it is sturdy.
Bars Make sure all the bars are not more than two inches apart and this is to make sure that no part of the baby can fit through them and thereby causing him/her to become stuck.
Mattress The mattress should be firm and no more than six inches tick.
Additionally, it should fit snuggly in all corners of the crib and this is to prevent the baby from becoming trapped between the crib and the mattress.
From birth to four or five months, depending on the development of the baby, you may be able to keep the collapsible part of the crib lowered, while the child sleeps.
However, it is good practice to always keep it "pulled up" so as to prevent the little one from falling out of it.
Additionally, if there are other sibling within the home, this will also help to keep them from playing with the newborn when he/she is resting.
Toys etc.
Do not allow your little one to go to sleep with toys, soother, bottle, cup, teddy bears etc.
in their crib.
These items can travel to their mouth and nose and thereby sealing off their breathing.
Check Up Perhaps once a month or more, it is also a good idea to check to make sure that all the screws are still tightly in place and that overall it is still sturdy.
