Learn the Electric Guitar: 5 tips to get you started

34
Most people realise that in order to succeed at playing the guitar, you have to practise as much as possible. However there are ways that will make your practise sessions more effective. Here are 5 tips that will help you get the best out of your time on your journey to becoming the next Jimi Hendrix or John Frusciante.

1. Decide which way you are going to learn the electric guitar, and stick to it. If you are using online tuition software, follow it exactly. If you are attending one-on-one private lessons then do exactly as you are taught. Once you decided which way to learn suits you, follow that method exactly and do not change mid way through.
2. Plan what you intend to cover in each practise session. Practising is going to take up a fair amount of your time so make sure you know what you want to cover in each practise session, and then stick to it. It might be as simple as learning a new chord progression, but decide beforehand and then do it all.
3. Just as athletes warm their muscles before any physical activity, guitarists should do the same to prevent themselves from tiring to quickly when the serious playing begins. Simply play a few scales which will warm up your fingers or just squeeze a tennis ball to get the blood flowing to your fingers.
4. Never, ever miss a practise session. It is important to establish good habits from the beginning so it is important to resist putting off that practise session until tomorrow. All the great guitarists became great because of the good practise habits they had and the fact that they never missed practises.
5. If you are using a guitar learning book, make sure you use one that provides a CD or DVD that lets you hear how the lesson should sound. If you don't have that how do you know that you are playing that chord right, or that note is the right one? Not only will the CD let you hear what you should be playing, but it will also likely give you some backing tracks to play along with. That kind of tuition is invaluable.

Finally, make sure you enjoy yourself. Take breaks from playing every now and again. Most guitarists will tell you that sometimes taking break can be the best thing for your playing. Just remember that almost all guitarists have their best tips on which ways are the most effective. However most of the above should appear on every guitarists 'best practise tips list.'
