To Respond Or Not To Respond

12
Many people actively involved in online dating sites have questions about answering or sending emails to and from other people, whether it is an initial response to an invitation or if email is an appropriate way to end a relationship.
For example, if someone emails with an invitation or wink and there is no interest, is it permissible to ignore the request or is a "sorry, I'm not interested" email the best response? The answer is complex.
While ignoring an email is common practice on dating sites, it seems rude to some people and they just cannot do it.
Some sites offer a clickable solution to this dilemma and send back a brief, automated "no thank you" note.
Here's a good rule of thumb to adhere to: it is appropriate to ignore an email if it is brief and to the point.
However, if someone receives a sincere invitation accompanied by a heartfelt two-page missive, it is kinder to send a nice thank you note with the rejection.
Imagine how you would feel if you received the response and you'll probably know how to proceed.
Another question many people ask is whether it is appropriate to end a relationship via email rather than face-to-face.
In this case, the only time a face-to-face meet is essential is if the two people have been on an intimate basis with one another.
Otherwise, ending things by email is not going to ruffle any feathers.
In fact, it gives the other person a chance to absorb the news in a private way and the person ending the relationship has a chance to disclose their reasoning without fear of interruption.
If you're both members of a dating site then you might both keep looking for other people to date.
There shouldn't be any hard feelings about ending a new relationship in this way - after all, you both signed up to meet new people so this is probably what you will continue to do.
If someone sends you an offensive or unwelcome message, the best course of action is to ignore it, and report them to the website admins.
Replying only gives them a reason to continue behaving in that way, and they might do the same to other people on the site.
Some people hide behind the relative anonymity that a dating site offers, but if you report them they may be removed from the site.
