How to Display Family Photos on Wall Shelves
- 1). Clean the wall shelves before displaying pictures on them. Wipe surface dust with a dry cloth. Wipe tough or old stains on a glass shelf with a sponge and stain remover. However, make sure the chemical cleaner does not damage the surface of the shelving unit.
- 2). Insert pictures in appropriately sized frames. If required, have your local photo shop enlarge a few family pictures to fit larger frames, or cut around family members’ pictures to fit them into smaller frames. Depending on personal preference, use frames in solid colors that match the theme or color of the room for a cohesive style, or use colors or textures that stand out.
- 3). Step back and view the size of wall shelving unit so you can decide the best arrangement option. Because you want to arrange numerous family photos, consider dividing the shelves into sections that reflect a different angle. For instance, dedicate the highest shelf to solo portraits of family members, the shelf underneath to black and white pictures and the remaining to themed photos.
- 4). Arrange the pictures in the top shelf in groups of two or three. Depending on personal preference, display the largest picture, preferably of the family matriarch or patriarch in the center, surrounded by those of the children. Alternatively, display the largest pictures in the back of the shelf and the smaller ones in front.
- 5). Arrange themed pictures, such as those from weddings, family vacations, babies, school events or business trips in a straight row. Use same-size photos in identical or different frames for a striking look. Alternatively, break the monotony of a row of three to five square or rectangular frames on a shelf with a round or oval frame.
- 6). Step back to review the arrangement on the wall shelf. Ideally, the pictures should resemble wall art that heightens the appeal of the room and not detract from it. If required, remove a single framed photo that stands out in the arrangement. Place small candles or decorative accents on the corners of shelves or between large photos for added effect.
