How to Use Terms in Writing a Story

    • 1). Create a theme for your story, which is also a term. A theme can be anything that you want. Many books have a theme of love, death or horror.

    • 2). Create your characters. Literary terms associated with characters include protagonist, hero and antagonist (the one who is against the protagonist). You will also have to develop major and minor characters, which are other terms associated with writing. Another character term you may want to develop is a dynamic character, which is a character that changes -- either himself or the course of the story -- in a profound way.

    • 3). Formulate your plot. Developing a plot includes a layout of what is going to occur during the story. Terms related to plot include causality (where one event occurs because of another), foreshadowing (where one event is a suggestion to another) or suspense (where you enact a sense of worry to the reader).

    • 4). Establish a setting. This term is used by you to paint a picture to the reader of where the story is taking place.

    • 5). Establish a point-of-view, a term meaning who is telling the story. You will have decide if there will be a narrator or if the story will be in first person. If there is a narrator, there are different terms to describe different types of narrators, such as an omniscient narrator (who knows all of the perspectives of all of the characters) or a limited omniscient narrator (who only know the perspectives of a few characters).

    • 6). Focus on language and style, which are artistic elements you will need to use when writing your story. Every writer has a different way of using words to describe events that occur in the story, which assist the reader to visualize the events taking place.
