    How to Replace Support Columns

    • 1). Determine exactly what the existing support columns are currently supporting. Use a carpenter's hammer and pry bar if necessary to remove any trim or covering of any sort that may be hiding the main structure.

    • 2). Obtain new support columns that are designed to support the same or more weight as the existing columns. Have them nearby and ready to put into place as the existing columns are removed.

    • 3). Build temporary support columns and place them under the structure that needs to be supported before the existing columns are removed. The temporary support columns will need to hold all of the weight that is currently being supported and be the proper length to allow placement of the new columns. Make the temporary columns a little longer than the new columns that will be placed. Place the top of the temporary columns where you want them to remain while providing the temporary support. Place the bottom at a slight angle and use a sledge hammer to knock the bottom of the column over until it is standing upright and under the temporary support areas. Use a level to place the temporary columns straight up and down. Place a block of wood under the temporary column if necessary before knocking it over to use as a base for the column. The existing columns will be loosened as the temporary columns take over the job of supporting the structure. Be careful that the existing columns are held tight so they do not fall over in an uncontrolled manner. When the weight is released, they can fall over without warning and cause serious injury or damage to people or property.

    • 4). Remove the original columns and thoroughly check the foundation to make sure it is at the proper level and structurally sound. Place the new column in the desired location with the level. Unless the foundation has moved or the old columns have rotted, the new columns should be the same length as the old columns. If the old columns have rotted and allowed the roof to sag, the new columns need to be the proper length to push the roof up to its proper height.

    • 5). Remove the temporary columns with a sledge hammer by knocking the bottoms over a little at a time. Make sure the new columns are placed and held exactly where you want them as they will be difficult to move after the weight is lowered onto them.
