What Items Found in Landfills Need to Be Recycled?

19

    Glass Items

    • Glass is one of the most efficiently recycled materials we produce. However, many people simply throw out their empty glass bottles and containers instead of recycling. Since glass is sturdy and resists the elements, discarded glass containers found in landfills can still be recycled. Take extra care when collecting glass items from a landfill, as pieces of the glass may be cracked or broken.

    Plastic Bottles

    • It is estimated that over 10% of the material in landfills is composed of discarded plastic bottles. This is because plastic bottles are the most common container used for beverages. The recycling process of plastics includes grinding and melting the plastic material, so even damaged bottles can be recycled. However, due to a different manufacturing process, the plastic used for bottle caps cannot be recycled. Bottle caps should be removed and discarded; otherwise, they can contaminate the recycling process.

    Metal Items

    • A great amount of the metal items in landfills can be recycled. Soda cans and other aluminum containers are some of the most abundant examples. Landfills also contain a large amount of steel containers used for food packaging, which can be recycled as well. Additionally, many recyclable metal items unrelated to food are often thrown out. This includes automotive parts, tools, utensils and various other scrap metal.

    Electronics

    • Many electronics and related accessories feature recyclable material. However, these items are commonly thrown out by consumers when replaced with newer units. Virtually any electronic device found in landfills features some recyclable metal or plastic. Aside from the device itself, many electronics are powered by batteries. Batteries can be especially harmful to the environment if left in landfills. Therefore, all batteries and battery-powered electronics found in landfills should be recycled. If the material is beyond recyclable condition, the recycling center will ensure that is properly disposed of so that the environmental impact of the waste is reduced.
