How to Make a Movie With a Basic Video Camera

9
    • 1). Purchase a high-definition video camera if you do not already have one. Major manufacturers, including Sony, Panasonic and Samsung have models available at prices comparable to standard-definition cameras, as HD grows closer to becoming the standard for digital video. This will give your movie the most professional look, especially on larger screen sizes.

    • 2). Purchase and install a video editing software program for your computer. A program like Windows Movie Maker will perform the basic tasks, but other programs like Corel VideoStudio Pro X3 and CyberLink PowerDirector allow for more advanced operations.

    • 3). Write the screenplay for your movie or plan to shoot an existing script, provided you have the film rights to that script and compensate the writer with an agreed-upon amount.

    • 4). Learn the basics of the craft of filmmaking, including sound, lighting, blocking, coverage and other shooting procedures and techniques. Numerous books about the craft are available at the major bookstores and online outlets including Amazon.com.

    • 5). Make use of any resources available in your area, such as local or state film offices or universities with a film or theater program, to help fill any cast or crew needs. You may be able to find people to work for little or deferred compensation in exchange for gaining the work experience.

    • 6). Shoot the footage for the movie, keeping in mind that using minimal locations and natural light, when possible, can simplify and speed up the process as well as keep the budget down.

    • 7). Connect the video camera to the computer and import the footage to the video editing program. Piece together the movie shot by shot, saving the project after every editing session, until you have a finished film.
