How to Design a Lounge & Playroom Area for Children
- 1). Measure and map out the area that you are looking to design for your children's playroom and lounge. Draw out the entire room on a notepad with notations for the length of each wall.
- 2). Determine whether you want a television in the room. If so, you may need to have the cable company run the cable to that room.
- 3). Decide on a color scheme for the room and a paint color for the walls. Consider making one wall or a section of it into a chalkboard or dry-erase board. Use one of the chalkboard or whiteboard paints on the market, or simply install framed-out boards directly on the wall.
- 4). Locate furniture for the room. A playroom typically has a small table with chairs for kids to do craft projects, and kid-size chairs or a large couch for lounging. Purchase organization bins or shelves for toys and supplies such as glue sticks, construction paper, crayons and markers. Choose furniture that is sturdy and can withstand a lot of wear and tear. Steer clear of items that have sharp corners and might cause injuries. Choose a TV stand that is stable and will keep the television securely in place so that it does not fall off.
- 5). Draw the furniture and organization bins on the room map you drew in Step 1. This will help you better visualize how the room will look and how well the furniture and bins will fit.
- 6). Paint the room in the color you have chosen. Place painter's tape on the moldings and a tarp on the floor to protect them from spills. Do the painting before you put any new carpet or padding down in the room.
- 7). Place the rug in the room. Be sure that it is large enough to cover the part of the room where children will spend the most time. A thick rug will prevent injuries if they fall. Consider carpeting the entire area if it has a wood or concrete floor. If you are concerned about allergies, choose a carpet that is hypoallergenic and not made of wool. Consider getting a pad that can be easily cleaned of spills and will not trap dirt and dust. The carpet or pad should be at least 1 inch thick to help protect children in falls.
- 8). Place your furniture in the room, and organize all the toys and supplies in bins.
