Columbus Martin Luther King Jr. Holiday Events & Activities
Martin Luther King Jr was a civil rights leader and his impact on the world is still felt to this day. Each year, the nation celebrates the life and work of Dr. King on the national holiday January 16th. Communities nationwide have a variety of events activities to honor the man and his message. Columbus is no exception. Many throughout the community work to make it a day "on" and not a day off by participating in projects that directly impact the Central Ohio area.

The 27th Annual Dr. Martin Luther King Breakfast will be celebrated on Monday, January 16, 2012 with keynote speaker Reverend Dr. Otis Moss, Jr., theologian, pastor and civic leader who was the co-pastor with Rev. Martin Luther King, Sr. at the Ebenezer Baptist Church, Atlanta, GA.

he annual Martin Luther King Day March which will begin from City Hall at 4:45 p.m. Participants of the march are encouraged to wear warm clothing and bring banners representative of their school, organization or city department. Banners and signs are also encouraged. Music will be provided along the march and donated hot drinks and cookies will be available prior to the march.

Hosted by Mayor Michael B. Coleman at Veterans Memorial, this free annual family-focused program celebrates the life and legacy of Dr. King and his contemporaries.
Enjoy a three act historical remembrance written by student interns from the OSU Professional Writing Minor Program in the Center for the Study of Teaching and Writing. The program begins with selections from Ballet Met dancers and incorporates original music by high school fellows of the Jazz Arts Academy - Lincoln Theatre throughout the performance.
The program is joined by a 150-voice youth choir under the direction of Cynthia Gowens. There’s even a surprise for the audience during the finale!

This year's MLK Day of Service is taking place on Monday, January 16, 2012.
Time:Registration will begin at 8:00 a.m. in the Archie Griffin Ballroom in the Ohio Union.
Upon arrival in the Ohio Union students will be assigned a service site, transported via bus to and from the service agency and lunch will be served at the Hale Center immediately following the community service activities. All volunteers will receive a free t-shirt and pizza for lunch.
Please dress appropriately for the weather and wear clothes you would not mind getting dirty at your service site.Some tasks may involve painting or cleaning at the service site.

From the website:During the planning of the first Capital University Martin Luther King, Jr. Day of Learning in January 1992, Dr. Bob Breithaupt suggested a southern style dinner much like one Dr. King may have enjoyed on a Sunday following church services. Dr. Breithaupt agreed to assemble a group of local musicians that included Hank Marr.
Mr. Marr was born on January 30, 1927 in a section of Columbus known then as Flytown. At an early age, he developed an interest in the piano, and continued playing and performing with the Sammy Hopkins Trio and Rusty Bryant bands. The Hank Marr Trio was formed in the mid-1950’s with Mr. Marr on the increasingly popular B-3 organ. He joined King Records in 1961 and recorded seven albums. Mr. Marr continued with his art, gaining immense popularity through the years. He remained a central part of the Martin Luther King, Jr. Day of Learning Jazz Luncheon until his death in 2004. The luncheon is now named in his honor and features several of his fellow musicians, including Bob Breithaupt, Bobby Floyd, Byron Stripling and Gene Walker.More »

7. MLK Day of Service
This annual community service event planned by the Ohio Union's ServeCorps takes place on MLK Day each January. There is no pre-registration. Registration is on a first-come-first-serve basis. Groups are encouraged to attend, but are encouraged to stay together in line.This year's MLK Day of Service is taking place on Monday, January 16, 2012.
