Termite Control Help
- If you see a termite with wings indoors, your home is most likely infested. Look for signs around your windows and doors, since winged termites are attracted to light. One common indicator of termite infestation is the "mud tube" shelter termites build. These tubes are approximately the width of a pencil, though they may occasionally be wider. If a mud tube is present, open the tube to see if termites are active. Even if no termites are present, the termites may have abandoned that tube for one in a different location in the house. You can also tell if termites have damaged the wood of your house by looking at the grain, since termites will typically hollow out the grain of wood. They also commonly make holes in plaster walls and drywall.
- Since special equipment and knowledge of termites are required, it is best not to treat your home on your own. Termite treatments should be done by a professional pest removal company or a skilled contractor who is able to remove termite damage and then treat your home for continued control. They may use bait traps, which let termites feed and return to the colony with poison. Chemicals may also be sprayed around your home, with particular attention to any infested areas.
- Most professional chemical treatments will last approximately five years. This varies, however, depending on how extensive the infestation and how careful the application of the treatment. Some termites can find their way through a small untreated area, which may result in new colony growth.
- To help keep termites under control, pay attention to moisture problems around your home. Fix leaks in pipes, faucets and in any appliance unit. Ensure that you do not have standing water on your roof or around the foundation of your home. Clean the gutters around your home, and screen and open any vents. Keep any scrap wood, paper or other construction debris at a distance from your home, since these are food sources for termites.
- Though the chemicals professionals use to treat termites have been tested for safety, if you have concerns about your family and pets coming in contact with these chemicals, you may want to consider using bait traps only.
