Small Family Reunion Ideas
- Organize a nice meal, either catered or at a restaurant, for your family. A classy but informal dinner is a good idea for a family reunion that will not include small children or that will include some older members who won't be able to engage in a lot of physical activity. Choose a restaurant or caterer that is in a mid-price range so that family members do not feel burdened by the cost. Try to find a restaurant that will accept a reservation for your group or that offers a private room for your function.
- Outdoor activities often help family members find things in common as they participate and interact with each other. With a smaller group, you can organize an outing for your family such as a weekend camping trip, a family hike, or a picnic at a park. Consider hosting your family reunion at a family member's home if someone can accommodate all of the guests. You can have a barbecue and organized activities such as water sports, a football or baseball game and obstacle courses.
- A potluck dinner is where each person or family attending brings at least one dish for the dinner. When you send out the invitations, require that everyone attending RSVP with not only the number of people attending but also with what kind of food they are planning to bring, such as a salad, vegetable or dessert. You can also include suggestion of what to bring in the invitation if you want to divide the types of dishes among your family members. Host the dinner at someone's home or rent a hall for the occasion, and encourage your family to mingle while sampling each other's favorite recipes.
