Procedure for Concrete Repairs
- Don the leather gloves and use the wire brush to remove all dirt and debris from the small crack. As long as the concrete is in a low-use area, such as a small sidewalk or rear patio, you will not have to enlarge the opening with the hammer and chisel. Mix a small amount of pure Portland cement with water. Add just enough water to make the consistency like bread dough. Pour a small amount of clean water in the crack. This will help in adhering the cement patch to the older concrete. Use the trowel and push the cement into the crack. Work the new cement level with the older slab using the trowel. Remove any excess cement patch material. Cover the area with a piece of plastic sheeting. Allow the patch to cure fully for 2 to 3 days. Clean any dried residue using the steel brush. Attempt to keep traffic from the patch for one full week.
- Again put on the leather gloves. Use the hammer and chisel to enlarge the crack so the sides are not slanted into the depth of the concrete. In other words, if the sides of the crack are sloped, make them perpendicular with the top of the concrete slab. Clean out all debris from the crack area. You may want to use a water hose to thoroughly remove any excess dirt and debris. Use a concrete mix that contains gravel for extra added strength. Mix the cement according to the manufacturer's directions. Wet the large crack if you have not already done so. Add the cement material into the crack one trowel scoop at a time, working it into the deeper sections of the crevice. Use the trowel to smooth off the top of the patch. Remove any excess cement from the area. Cover the cement patch with a sheet of plastic. Keep it covered for up to a week so the concrete will cure slowly. Set up barriers to keep all traffic from the area.
- Repair the hole in much the same way as the large crack. Chisel the sides till they are straight, up and down. Remove all loose material from the hole. Inspect the hole before adding the gravel cement patch. Check for any hairline cracks in the older concrete. Any cracked concrete will have to be removed from the hole prior to adding the repair material. Failure to do so will only cause the patch to crack later in time, when the repair has fully cured. Wet the hole in the same manner as the large crack. Add the gravel Portland cement one trowel at a time, working the material into all crevices. Smooth over the top of the patch and remove all excess cement. Cover the repair with a plastic sheet for at least one week of time. Keep all traffic from moving over the area.
