WW 2 War Boats - Cruisers

19
Winston Churchill was once quoted as saying that throughout WW II, the ongoing battle on the Atlantic was among the things of top concern.
Indeed WW II saw countries expend considerable time and resources to create the best warships that could dominate the seas.
At the start of WW II, the war ships available were those made just after WW I.
As WWII progressed, it quickly became apparent that they were no longer adequate.
Battleships used during WW II weighed between 30,000 and 70,000 tons and were armed with about ten fighting guns measuring between 11 and 18 inches.
The Scharnhorst German battleship had ten guns that were 11 inches long; while the Japanese ship called the Yamato had guns measuring 18 inches.
The ship was protected with thick armor with the thickest surrounding the vital areas of the ship and less dense around the bow and stern.
As the war progressed so did the sophistication of the battleships.
In fact, all ships used during WWI had to be modified before they could be used for the Second World War.
Guns were made to shoot harder and reach farther.
WWII ships also had to be adapted for speed.
The old ships used for battle were not actually known for speed.
Battleships had to be fast so new ships were built to be faster and more efficient.
One of the classifications of battle ships available and used during the Second World War were "Cruisers".
The 1922 Washington naval treaty gave birth to light cruisers that were usually equipped with about 6 guns.
The Washington treaty specified that all cruisers could not exceed a maximum displacement of 10,000 tons.
Light cruisers were specified not to have guns exceeding 155mm, and heavy cruisers should not be armed with guns exceeding 203mm.
The term light and heavy cruisers thus came to apply to the type of armament the vessel was equipped with rather than the size.
Light cruisers were often used for sea patrols, to shadow enemy movements, scout for battle fleet, enforce blockades, and engage the enemy in surface water confrontations.
They were equipped with enough fire power to match most of the other types of war ships used during WWII.
Among the heaviest and most efficient cruisers of WW II was the Japanese heavy cruisers known as the Mogami's.
The Mogami was initially designed as a light cruiser and armed with 6 gun turrets to keep in line with the treaty, but at the start of the war the guns were exchanged for 8 twin turrets.
Cruisers were designed to be bigger, more durable and heavier than Destroyers.
They were also equipped with exceptional long range firepower.
This long range distinction is also the major difference between cruisers and destroyers.
Cruisers, even light cruisers were designed for durability and longevity.
They came with extra armor protection vital to the survival of the boat while under attach.
While you may find it difficult to obtain and skipper a full size WW II battle ship, you may certainly enjoy playing with remote control warships designed as authentic replicas.
Assemble your own Navy of RC warships.
These high class toys are great fun for kids and adults alike.
