How to Choose Plantar Fasciitis Shoes

27
Plantar fasciitis or inflammation of the plantar fascia happens when the ligament develops microscopic tears where it joins the heel bone, or along the ligament itself.  With poor biomechanics, too much use or other catalysts, the pressure on the plantar fascia during the process of walking and running and the shift of body weight from one foot to the other can draw the fascia from its attachment to the heel and develop microscopic tears.

Wearing good shoes at all times is very important in treating plantar fasciitis and avoiding it in the first place.  Often wearing poorly fitting or made shoes can cause plantar fasciitis.  Try not to walk barefoot or wearing flip-flops as the heel doesn't have any cushioning and this can damage the plantar fascia.  Ideally, shoes should have no or minimal heel (for ladies, don't wear heels over 3 inches), good cushioning in the sole, and padded arch support.  Some shoes often lack the proper cushioning, particularly in the heel and forefoot, and don't permit sufficient structural support around the arch and mid-foot.  With improved cushioning and support of good shoes, the stress on the areas affected by plantar fasciitis and throughout the foot while exercising can be lowered by a large amount, helping to prevent plantar fasciitis.

How a shoe fits is important.  Wearing small shoes can aggravate plantar fasciitis.  When choosing shoes or trying on shoes that have been purchaed and delivered online, patients should do so late in the day.  This is because feet swell during the day and become slightly larger than at the start of the day.  Furthermore, it is common for people to have one foot that is slightly larger than the other.  If this is true, patients should fit the shoe on the slightly larger foot.  Shoes are better slightly too big than the other way around.

When trying shoes, focus on the padding and arch support, heel bone, and front of your feet.  Comfort is the most important factor and there shouldn't be any pressure points on any one part of the foot.  Select shoes with a slightly bigger toe area to  any problems with bunions or other toe conditions. Athletic shoes that fit well and provide good support are perfect.  Running shoes should be replaced frequently since the insoles lose their cushioning over time.  If you pick up a pair of new running shoes and compare them to your current pair you will easily see the difference in support and cushioning supplied by the brand new pair.  Exchanging your running shoes is a genuinely good investment for combating plantar fasciitis.

Shoes designed for plantar fasciitis have treatments built into the innersole of the shoe, allowing you to treat the condition without needing special insoles.

Some shoes have specific designs which apply the optimal pressure to the plantar fascia, stretching it the required amount and reducing pain and inflammation.  Moreover, plantar fasciitis shoes are designed to incorporate structural support surrounding the heel to guard it from any further damage.

Early diagnosis and a structured treatment plan are crucial for healing plantar fasciitis.  If treatment is held up or deficient in the initial stages of plantar fasciitis, plantar fasciitis can take six to eighteen months or more to be fully treated.  Nevertheless by following a suitably mapped out treatment plan and blending several of the individual treatment methods available, thankfully in the vast majority of cases, non-invasive treatment leads to a fully recovery.  Only in the worst cases is surgery required.
