Gay Life in Arizona
Arizona has a very undefinable culture when it comes to gay rights. Arizona has one of the highest numbers of gay elected officials in the nation—19 in the state, including two in the state senate. They have flip-flopped on the issues of gay marriage, as well.
2006-8: The Arizona electorate was the first state constituency in the country to vote down a referendum banning same-sex marriage. However, two years later, the state banned gay marriage anyway.
The Arizona statute is noted for its lengthy disapproval of the performance or recognition of same-sex unions. With 56% of the vote, Arizona Proposition 102 was passed, defining marriage as between a man and a woman.
