How to Recycle Bottles and Cans in Bins
- 1). Call 1 (800) 253-2687 from anywhere in the U.S. for the contact number of the local recycling center if your home or community does not have a scheduled weekly pickup of recyclables. If you have a recycling bin, it may have the contact number on the side of the recycling company that picks up your bottles and cans. Since some communities are serviced by more than one recycling company, you need to call the correct company.
- 2). Call the recycling center that provided the bins and ask when they pick up on your street, what their requirements are for sorting recycling, and what types of glass they accept. In some cases, only clear glass can be recycled. In others, any bottle-shaped glass or plastic is accepted.
- 3). Rinse out bottles that contain anything besides water and throw away lids. The metal lids from glass bottles may be recyclable. If you have multiple recycling bins for sorting, separate plastic, glass, cans and metal lids. If you have a single bin, put in all the accepted recycling and put it at the curb for the appropriate pickup time.
- 4). Take the recycling in bins to the local recycling center if they don't do curbside pickup. Take the bins with the appropriately sorted materials for easier drop-off.
