How to Motivate Black Male Teenagers
- 1). Refrain from using negative stereotypes or statistics in hopes that it will encourage black male teenagers. African-American males are sometimes inundated with statistics regarding their education level, intelligence or lack thereof, and health risks. Being constantly reminded of the statistics can be discouraging.
- 2). Offer examples and reminders of black males, younger and older, who have become successful against all odds. Research unknown, successful African-Americans or those who aren't frequently mentioned (Marcus Garvey, Crispus Attucks) in addition to the obvious black icons in history (Malcolm X, Martin Luther King Jr., Barack Obama). As black male teens realize that there are also lesser-known individuals who have made a difference, it may motivate them to do better.
- 3). Set goals with African-American teenage males. Reward them with gifts or positive reinforcement when each milestone of the goal is met. Goals can include achieving a higher grade point average, improved study habits or consistent practice in a sport or activity of their choice.
- 4). Spend more time focusing on the teenager's strengths instead of weaknesses. Motivate black teenagers by emphasizing their strengths, and give praise when they excel in challenging feats.
- 5). Probe black teens to determine what their interests are and what motivates them. Teenagers in general will tell you about the things that motivate them if you show an interest. Use their suggestions as a means of motivating each individual teenager. Look for commonalities among all black teenagers for ideas that may motivate the entire group.
