34
One of the most important cultural attractoins in Brazil, the National Museum at Quinta da Boa Vista in Rio de Janeiro will reopen tomorrow, after 11 days closed.

A financial crisis involving late payments for cleaning services, caused by a delay in the release of budgetary federal funds, led to the closing of the institution maintained by UFRJ, the Federal University of Rio de Janeiro.

Created by Portuguese king D.

João VI on June 6, 1818, initially at Campo de Sant'Ana, the museum was transferred to Paço de São Cristóvão in 1892, The paço, or palace, had served as the residence of Emperor Pedro II and his family until 1889, when Brazil became a republic.

The museum's collection comprises exhibitions in zoology, paleontology, geology, ethnology, archaeology, and more. Among the highlights are fossils from Chapada do Araripe, located at the borders of Ceará, Pernambuco and Piauí.
