As the activity for the presidential election gathers steam, the political partiers seem to be indulging more in dirty politics and rather seem to be making the election of new president as "dirty game".
The political parties instead of evolving consensus on presidential election seem to be indulging in political upmanship to get political mileage out of election for the post of president and vice-president.
The BJP has made it very clear it will not support for any Congress candidate including Pranab Mukherjee and Hamid Ansari. In case no consensus is evolved, it would necessitate contest for the coveted post of President.
As far as Congress is concerned, it is playing wait and watch policy and keeping its cards close to the chest. Not only this, with senior BJP leader and Leader of the Opposition Sushma Swaraj also has ruled out any sort of compromise with on the Presidential election by accepting the vice President's post in exchange for supporting its candidate for president.
Though the Union Finance Minister Pranab Mukherjee and vice-president Hamid Ansari are being tipped as probable candidates of Congress for the post of president, Mukherjee said that it is merely a speculation.
Congress-led UPA has 42 per cent votes and BJP-led NDA with 28 per cent votes could get the candidate agreeable to both of them elected without seeking support from other parties.
However, Sushma has categorically stated that BJP will not accept any Congress candidate including Pranab Mukherjee. She also stated that Ansari does not have the stature to be President and hence BJP will not support him has annoyed some of the BJP allies like Sharad Yadav's JD (U).
However, on the question of candidature of A P J Abdul Kalam, Swaraj said that BJP could support him. She said that BJP was looking to forge an understanding with non-Congress parties as it could support their Presidential candidate and they support our Vice Presidential candidate.
Swaraj did not reveal the names of any possible candidates who could be fielded by BJP-led NDA for the post of President and Vice-President in case there is a contest. Sources in the NDA said that Chief Minister of Punjab Parkash Singh Badal could be its probable candidate.
However, since the NDA does not have the numbers to get its President in Rashtrapati Bhawan, the alliance is looking at possibilities of winning the Vice Presidential election.
Punjab Chief Minister Parkash Singh Badal is reportedly not averse to proposal pertaining to his candidature pushed for the post of vice-president since it would suit him as it would also open the way for his son Sukhbir Singh Badal to take over the reins of the state and succeed him as Chief Minister of Punjab.
