Make the Initial Ring
Make the Initial Ring
Pick up an odd number of beads and tie into a ring using a square knot. There are 19 beads in the ring I used in this photo.
Adding the First Bead
Pass needle and thread through the first bead strung. At this point, it may be helpful to slide the ring onto a dowel or other round object. You can also use an empty cardboard toilet paper or paper towel tube that has been cut lengthwise and taped back together to the appropriate width. Avoid making the tube too big or else the beadwork will collapse when you remove it.
Pick up a bead, skip the next bead in the ring, and pass through the next bead.
(Second bead from where you are exiting.) Pull snugly.
Add all the Beads of the First Round
Continue to work in this manner until you have added 9 beads.
Since there is no “step up” to let you know when you have completed a round when working tubular odd count peyote stitch, you will simply continue to add beads to the tube as you work. Pick up a bead and pass needle and thread through the first bead added in Step 3.
The finished sample of tubular odd count peyote.
The beadwork will continue to spiral around.
