Outsourcing Your IT Is Not A Magic Solution

17
Most people outside IT (Information Technology) community see IT as a world of work-maniac, unsolicited people with alien language.
What is Linux, SQL Server, Cisco, ping, hard disk partition, RAID, hub and all of those Borg's terms? If your business needs e-mail, database server, networking and data entry application but you have no idea how to achieve them all and unfamiliar with all those terms coming from Delta Quadrant, then you can employ someone with those technical skills or just outsourcing it.
Today as more and more companies focus on their core business, outsourcing becomes the answer for their needs of service.
Say your core business is to make part for automotive industry, and then you will focus on how to make good parts at excellent quality, think nothing else.
Delivery? Find a good cargo company and make deal with them.
Financial balancing report by the end of every month? Outsourcing it.
E-mail, application server and system installation? Outsourcing and outsourcing them all.
Need not to think about your worker's welfare, you can saving cost, money and effort and you can keep your employee number at minimum.
But wait a minute, is it as simple as that? Based on my experience: NO! You can always find someone who can do the part for you at the cost level you can afford but unfortunately in most cases, you know an outsourcing IT vendor is proved to be excellent or not is when disaster comes.
I have posted in my blog a true story about a company that lost their entire sales data just because their IT consultant didn't do its job when their server crash.
It then taught them something: when you're outsourcing your system, don't take it for granted.
You can ask someone else to setup and maintain your server, you can ask someone else to back up your data and taking care of every problem but it is a wise move to have someone inside your organization who can check and re-check the vendor's work and make sure they do it in the correct way.
In my blog I mention that the vendor did the data back up but they didn't back up in a way it should be.
It wouldn't happen if only they have someone to check it for them.
Your IT guy will also be the person in charge to communicate with vendor.
Not every body familiars with all those alien terms, remember? So if you're thinking about outsourcing your IT and eliminate the IT division from your organization, I suggest you to think it again.
You may think that at most all the time, IT staff have nothing to do but browsing and therefore maintain them costs you much but just like air bag, you will be thank you if accident happens, you have someone who can save you from fatal injure.
