    Establish Classroom Etiquette and Behavior

      It is important for the teacher to communicate with the students about what is acceptable behavior in the classroom. The teacher must convey effectively to the class the following rules of manners: raise your hand when you have something to say, say thank you and please to the teacher and other students, wait your turn to speak to the teacher when you see she is busy, pay attention when other students are speaking and stay focused when the lesson is in procession. The teacher should also implement a reward system for students who abide by the rules. Examples of a reward system are bonus points to earn prizes, extra free time and extra time on the computer or SMART Board.

    Model and Teach Skill for Appropriate Behavior

      The teacher sets the example for appropriate behavior. She role models the correct behavior to students so that they may follow her example. Although the teacher does not have to raise her hand when she speaks, she can call on students who do raise their hands, reminding the class that this is an exemplary form of class etiquette. As the teacher instructs students how to learn a new skill, she can also instruct students how to behave. If she sees a student helping another student who has behavioral problems, she should remind the second student to say thank you to the first. If the teacher hears one student interrupting a second student while she is speaking in a class discussion, the teacher can look at the first student directly and motion for him to remain quiet by holding her index finger to her mouth to shh him.

    Modify the Classroom Setting to Restrict Behavior Problems

      The teacher should know her students well enough to know which group of students may talk incessantly to each other. She needs to ensure that the classroom seating will separate these students. She may seat a talkative student with a quiet student. Students who are disruptive should be seated in the corners of the classrooms so that when they are being unruly other students will pay less attention to them; disruptive students seated in front gain more attention because everyone can see their inappropriate behavior. In the instance a student calls out when he is not supposed to, the teacher may ignore the calling out and then call on a student who is raising his hand. This ensures that the lesson is not interrupted while reinforcing good behavior and negating poor behavior.

    Identify the Behavior Problem and Try to Resolve It

      The teacher should understand why the student is behaving inappropriately. Is the student seeking attention? Does the student have any physical conditions that cause him to call out? Is the student having problems at home? Such issues must be assessed in order to resolve the inappropriate behavior. For example, if the student is seeking attention and constantly calls out, then the teacher should speak to the student individually about the matter and remind the student that he is awarded attention when he does raise his hand; otherwise, he has to face the consequences the teacher decides to set. If the teacher discerns that the student has a hearing problem, she may recommend the student to see the school nurse to see if a hearing aid is needed. If the teacher discovers there is a problem within the home, she may suggest to the student to see the guidance counselor, who may recommend therapy in dealing with the situation and learning how to cope with it by not acting out in class.

    Setting Up Consequences for Disrupting a Classroom

      Just as the teacher establishes the rules for the classroom, she must also define effectively what the consequences are for inappropriate behavior. For instance, she could say that students who call out will be ignored and that bonus points that would go towards earning prizes will be deducted. Students may also lose privileges such as extra time on the computer. Students who act out may have to sit quietly while watching other students enjoy their privileges. If all else fails, then the teacher should address the situation to the principal and guidance counselors of the school to come up with strategies for how to resolve the situation.
