How Do I Grow Sweet & Sour Cherries As Cross-Pollinators?
- 1). Choose sites for the cherry trees, where they will both get full sun and good drainage. Plant your cherry trees 18 to 20 feet apart to give the trees room for mature growth (cherry trees can grow to up to 30 feet in height and 20 feet in width). Don't plant cherry trees under telephone wires or other trees, and try to choose a spot that is permanent so you don't have to transplant the tree.
- 2). Amend the soil at your planting sites. Mix a combination of half quick-draining soil and half organic compost into the soil, to a depth of 2 feet, to support cherry trees. Plant the trees in holes that are as deep as their root balls, and three times as wide. Water the trees with 2 inches of water after planting.
- 3). Maintain cherry trees with 2 inches of water a week. Do not mulch or fertilize the trees, as they don't require it. Turn organic compost into the soil once a month for support, and depend on wind, bees and butterflies for cross pollination in spring.
