Pets In the Raw - Dog Food That Is

53
I read an article about mom and pop pet stores having hard times just like we all have in the past couple of years.
A lot of them made it through and here's what some of them are doing to gain more customers.
The big conglomerate pet stores don't want to carry the expensive raw dog food so the smaller stores are jumping on the band wagon and putting in refrigerators and freezers so they can carry all the expensive, raw unprocessed meat.
Good for them.
Some of the stuff is great like raw meat bones for dogs to chew on (outside).
I want to talk about raw dog food and the pros and cons of raw verses manufactured.
I have to say that I have tried raw meat and poultry for my dogs and it took a bit for them to get used to it.
When they did get used to it they loved it.
I will never do it again though.
Here's why;
  • The work involved became unmanageable.
  • My kitchen smelled like a butcher shop.
  • I needed an extra refrigerator to store the stuff.
  • My dog's poop was slimy.
  • They wore it like a perfume.
  • Salmonella
  • Cross contamination
  • Mad cow disease
  • Hoof and mouth (kidding)
Maybe I'm being a little harsh but I really didn't have the time to do all the preparation involved and still work and take care of a house.
So I did the next best thing, I buy at a large membership store and get my dogs and my family meat, salmon and chicken in large quantities which I share with my dogs.
I microwave everything and save the juices.
I scrape of any fat and cut up, reheat and serve with dry dog food.
When my friends ask what I had for dinner I tell them I had dog food, minus the kibble of course.
It's all the nutrition and vitamins with half the mess.
Dry dog food is fortified with extra vitamins and minerals and just like us our dogs need the extra stuff that dry dog food provides.
Yes, its grain, and some dogs are allergic to it but none of mine have been so odds seem pretty low.
There have been a few problems with processed foods for dogs but so have there been for people, it happens.
Handicapped dogs are at a bigger peril for getting sick than healthy dogs so I would think more than twice about giving your dog raw meat or chicken.
Raw beef bones are great once in a while because it helps keep their teeth clean.
I love the naysayers who tell us dogs are nothing more than domesticated wolves, that they have the same digestive system as wild animals.
I'm not too sure about that but my dogs bring me dead things occasionally but they aren't eating them.
It's like, here you go mom cook this for me.
So, each person has a choice what to feed their dogs, you probably will try it and I would love to know how that works for you and your pet.
