The Honey of Colmenar
Down through the centuries Colmenar has been producing the golden nectar, honey. Colmenar is situated in the Axarquia Mountains, north of Malaga and is one of the white villages of Andalucia brimming with history. The English translation of Colmenar is beehive, a suitable name for the village.
In an attempt to raise awareness and increase tourism the Junta de Andalucia financed to a tune of 344,000.00 euros the construction of a museum called El Museo de la Miel, the Honey Museum. Apart from raising awareness and promoting Colmenar's honey, it also helped create jobs, brings tourists and wealth to the area.
The Museo de la Miel is housed in a restored sixteenth century building, in the centre of Colmenar. The museum boasts multi lingual, interactive, audio visual presentations, workshops, library and an enormous beehive activity area.
The Colmenar area has several varieties of honey and at the museum you can observe the process of honey production, extraction and the health benefits of this amazing golden liquid. There are eight varieties of Malaga honey, flower, rosemary, orange, thyme, eucalyptus, avocado, forest and chestnut; during your visit to Colmenar you can buy honey.
Colmenar, apart from its famed honey is also part of the Olive Oil and Mountain Route, Ruta del Aceite y los Montes.
There are archaeological remains dating back to Neolithic and Iron Age times in the Cueva de las Pelusas and Cortijo de Gonzalo.
Leaving Malaga, head north in the direction of Antequera where you will pick up signs leading you to Colmenar, the journey is approximately 35 kilometers, taking you through breathtaking countryside.
The best way to explore the Costa del Sol and inland Malaga is by car, public transport is quite limited across the board, buses and trains specifically. By car you can plan your holiday, adhere to your own timetable and cover far more areas. Other areas I would highly recommend and within an hours drive of Malaga are Sierra de las Nieves, El Chorro and the Guadalhorce lakes, Torcal and Ronda. Although honestly, the list is endless including all the historical villages and towns on the way. Endless holidays can be enjoyed discovering the hidden gems that inland Malaga holds in store for you.
Andalucia has much more than just the climate to offer. There are some areas of incredible beauty tucked away still undiscovered by tourism. Car rental is recommended, you can book car hire Malaga airport [http://www.carhiremalagaairport.info] in advance to take advantage of the best offers available.
