Health insurance is a necessity if you don't want to cover the hospital and doctor costs should you get sick. To put that into perspective, cancer can cost $300,000 per year; leukemia can cost someone more than $2 million a year. There are some tricks, luckily, to getting affordable health insurance. - Call different health insurance companies, and get a "quote" of how much their health care packages run. Make a list of these different health insurance companies along with how much they charge per month. You will also need to make note of everything these companies offer and cover and what they don't.
- With the federal health care reform starting to take effect, adults (up to the age of 26) can stay on their parents health insurance plans as of October 2010. Young adults, ages 19 to 29 make up 30 percent of uninsured individuals in the U.S., according to the National Conference of State Legislatures. This is mostly due to being kicked off their parents insurance once they graduate, then not being able to find a job with health benefits. Luckily, these adults can stay or go back on their parents' health insurance plans.
- For healthy people, increasing the deductible is an easy and quick way to lower your premiums giving you affordable insurance. However, this is not a good choice for those who are unhealthy or have frequent hospital visits. By raising your deductible, you will have to pay more out-of-pocket. But, if you never go to the hospital, you'll won't have to pay expenses out-of-pocket.
- Only purchase the insurance that you need. Extras like dental, vision and mental health "can sometimes be removed from your policy at your option, resulting in lower premiums and a more affordable health insurance policy," according to Health Insurance In-Depth.
