"I Want to Start an Oil Change Business in Tampa FL," He Claimed

18
As a former franchisor founder of several franchising companies, I am often asked by start-up entrepreneurs about what it would take to get their own business going.
One of the companies I was previously involved with was a mobile oil change company.
Thus, I was not the least bit surprised when a gentleman from Tampa FL contacted me about starting a local on-site oil change company to service small truck fleets and automobiles at customer's homes.
He said to me; "I Want to Start an Oil Change Business in Tampa FL and am interested in the business, there isn't really any competition in my area so it seems like it could be a very profitable idea.
I have over 4 years lube tech experience do you have any recommendations on how to get a deal or anything set up to get the oil and/or filters and any advice would be very helpful, and appreciate people still supporting small business.
Thanks so much.
" Here is my reply and what you need to consider if you are wishing to open such a company in that area of Florida, or anywhere else in the US for that matter, as all of this advice is relevant; Actually there is a bit of competition there in the Tampa Bay area from what I saw when we reviewed that area.
I really do not recommend getting into this business, the margins just aren't there, and you have some traffic issues in and around Tampa Area obviously.
Labor supply is often dismal too.
You might wish to reconsider.
However if you do decide to go for it and start up such a company, then I'd recommend that you go after 80% fleet business and only 20% corporate parking lots and personal cars of busy middle class or retired wealthy class customers there.
Remember Wal-Mart is changing oil for $14.
99 You might wish to go and find a local oil jobber for best prices on supplies.
Look up "Oil Jobber" in phone book.
And these folks are Old School, so don't approach them like a Metrosexual talking on you iPhone.
Talk straight, no cowcrap, and tell them exactly what you are doing, ask them for assistance.
This industry and service sector is not for everyone, it's not a good place to do business if you are a wimp, or if you don't like to get dirty, as it is an unforgiving business if you make any mistakes.
Please consider all this.
