How to Convert Open Office Documents to Microsoft Word

    Using OpenOffice Writer

    • 1). Start OpenOffice Writer.

    • 2). Select "Open" from the File menu.

    • 3). Select the the document you want to convert.

    • 4). Click the "Open" button to open the file in OpenOffice Writer.

    • 5). Select "Save as..." from the File menu.

    • 6). Select "Microsoft Word 97/2000/XP (.doc)" from the "Save as type" menu.

    • 7). Click "Save" to finish converting the file in Microsoft Word format.

    Using Microsoft Word 2007

    • 1). Start Microsoft Word.

    • 2). Select "Open" from the Office Button. Select "OpenDocument Text" from the "Files of type" menu.

    • 3). Select the OpenOffice document (file with an .odt extension) you want to convert.

    • 4). Click the "Open" button to open the file in Microsoft Word.

    • 5). Open the "Save as..." menu on the Office Button. Select "Word Document" to convert to Word 2007 or "Word 97-2003 Document" to save in the older Word format. The "Save As" window opens.

    • 6). Click the "Save" button to finish converting the file to Microsoft Word format.

    Using Microsoft Word XP or Word 2003

    • 1). Download the "ODF Add-in for Office" from SourceForge (see the Resources) if you don't already have this add-in installed. On the SourceForge website, select the folder with the latest release and patch/hotfix numbers. The English version of the installer starts with "OdfAddInForOfficeSetup-en" followed by the version number.

    • 2). Launch the installer. The installer will automatically install the Office Compatibility Pack. Continue through the prompts, answering standard software installation questions. You can keep the default options (unless you want to change them), and just keep clicking "Next" until the installation has completed.

    • 3). Start Microsoft Word.

    • 4). Select "Open ODF..." from the File menu. The "Open ODF" file browser window opens.

    • 5). Select the file you wish to convert. Click the "OK" button to open the file. The document will be imported. A dialog window may inform you that "Some elements may be lost during the transformation..." Click "Details" to see information about the translation. Click "OK" to finish opening the document.

    • 6). Select "Save as..." from the File menu.

    • 7). Select "Word Document" from the "Save as type" menu.

    • 8). Click "Save" to finish converting the file to Microsoft Word format.
