How do I Build a Backyard Pellet Trap?
- 1). Remove the door from a medium- to large-sized breaker box. They will often have several screws used to attached the door, so a screwdriver will make quick work of removing it. If the door is riveted on, it may require metal snips or a grinding wheel to remove it.
- 2). Pack the empty cavity of the breaker box with duct sealant to a thickness of at least one inch. This material is usually used to seal duct work to prevent air leakage, but it makes a perfect backstop for lead pellet rifle ammunition. One of the primary benefits is that it prevents the lead bullets from hitting a hard backstop and splattering. When the ammo splatters, it releases dangerous lead dust into the air. This design prevents this harmful occurrence.
- 3). Clip your target over the opening to the breaker box using a magnetized clip. A simple metal clip with a magnet will work fine. This will hold the paper target over the opening to the breaker box. When the paper is shot up, just clip on a new one. If the duct sealant should lose its effectiveness through repeated shooting, just apply a new layer. The metal breaker box will last a lifetime.
