How to Treat Dandruff in Chemically Treated Hair

    • 1). Experiment to see if your hair responds best to less frequent shampooing or if it requires daily washing to keep the dandruff under control. Typically, chemically treated hair does best with less shampooing, which helps restore natural oils. Some dandruff conditions also react well to less shampooing, so limit washings to twice weekly and see how it responds.

    • 2). Look for a shampoo that both rehydrates your hair and combats dandruff. Dandruff shampoos that contain pyrithione zinc that also nourish hair are safer for chemically treated hair than other types of dandruff shampoos. Avoid selenium sulfide shampoos as these can cause color to be stripped from chemically treated hair. Follow with a nourishing daily conditioner.

    • 3). Super hydrate hair once a week with juniper oil, which is good for dandruff and also can rehydrate damaged hair. Use a mixture of 10 drops of juniper oil to 1 ounce of jojoba oil, rubbing into scalp and hair. Leave on for 30 minutes, then shampoo.

    • 4). Invest in a large microfiber towel for drying hair and blot it dry rather than toweling hair after shampooing. Do not wrap hair turban style in a towel, as this can further damage weakened hair.

    • 5). Comb wet hair---don't brush---with a wide-toothed comb, gently removing tangles from hair ends and later moving towards the scalp. Avoid blow drying hair and using styling products other than a rich leave-in conditioner.
