How to Troubleshoot Citrus Fruit Trees

24
    • 1). Inspect your citrus fruit tree frequently, watching for trouble signs like prematurely falling leaves, sooty foliage, falling fruit, scabs on the fruit, rotten areas on the fruit, sparse limbs or yellow leaves.

    • 2). Identify the problem with your citrus fruit tree. The Texas Cooperative Extension offers an online chart with common citrus tree problems and suggested solutions.

    • 3). Water and fertilize your fruit trees properly according to your tree variety and soil and climate conditions to avoid problems like yellowing and dropping leaves, twig die-back, leaf necrosis or tip-burned leaves, creased fruit rind and fruit splitting.

    • 4). Wash the citrus tree's leaves with soapy water to control insects that cause a sooty black residue on the tree's leaves.

    • 5). Spray the tree only if necessary with insecticide, miticide or fungicide to control insects, mites and fungus causing extensive removable, discolored raised spots on the fruit rind, leaves or bark, scabs or a rusty-colored rind. Excess spray accumulating at the bottom of the fruit can result in spray burn, characterized by necrosis of the bottom of the fruit.
