Spray Tanning: The Top Three Tips You Must Read Prior To Tanning
Chances are you have had, or know someone who has had a spray on tan.
You may know them for the wrong reasons- unsightly orange faces and white streaks are all too common if applied incorrectly, or if you are unprepared and do not maintain your tan correctly.
Here are the Top Three Tips to help avoid spray tan disasters.
1.
Preparation: Wash, Exfoliate, Moisturise My father always told me "preparation is key" and this is very true in the spray tanning arena.
Ideally, you will be preparing for your spray tan a week prior to getting bronzed.
The better prepared your skin is, the longer your tan will last.
Wash, exfoliate, and moisturise your skin at least 24 hours prior to receiving your tan.
Immediately prior to your appointment, wash using an oil free soap- and rid your skin of any greasy residue that may block and prevent the spray tan from sinking in.
Any hair removal must be completed at least 24 hours prior to the tan, shaving in particular opens up the pores on the skin which act as sponges to the spray tan ingredients, giving an uneven finish.
If you are receiving laser treatments, please refer to your therapist prior to receiving a spray tan.
Proper preparation prevents poor performance...
and in this case makes your beautiful spray tan last longer.
2.
After the tan: Leave the bra at home! After receiving your spray on tan, ensure your tanning technician dries you off properly using the air spray from the spray tanning machine.
The product used will dictate how quickly your spray tan will dry, but as a general rule make sure you are touch dry before attempting to put on any clothes, this will usually take between one and five minutes (which can be a long time to hang around naked in front of a stranger- but will be worth it to avoid any unsightly white marks).
Once you are dry, if you do need to get dressed, wear loose dark clothing, and do not attempt to put on a bra or any tight underwear.
A bra strap can leave a white stripe on the shoulder, which is difficult to fix.
So let it all hang free, and remember- this is not the time to attempt to wriggle into your freshly pressed skinny jeans/ comfy UGG boots! Follow directions from your tanning technician- a qualified technician should advise you which product they are using, and what the tan development time is - i.

how long it takes to complete the bronzing and be ready for you to shower.
Whatever you do- do NOT shower prior to the nominated development time.
If you do you will not walk out of the shower with a lighter tan, you will simply walk out with a streaky, runny mess.
If you want to be lighter, ensure you discuss colour options with your spray tanning technician before you get sprayed.
Other things to avoid during development time: exercise, doing the dishes, swimming, trying on tight outfits, and you guessed it..
sex! During your first shower, use an oil free soap, and do not scrub with any type of sponge or exfoliating mit.
The first shower post spray tan should be more of a rinse, which will avoid any uneven patches.
Pat dry, and use a smooth towel.
3.
Maintenance: Moisturise, Moisturise, Moisturise After each shower - moisturise! I suggest using either a tan extender (your technician will be able to advise the recommended one for your tanning product), or a light moisturiser which also includes a gradual tanning agent.
This is key.
This will "top up" your colour, and ensure that you retain much needed moisture in your skin, which will also help your colour to fade evenly by reducing uneven exfoliation of the dry patches of the skin.
