The Bedding Industry Relies on the Mattress Store

10
If you or someone you know is in the market for a new mattress or bedding of any sort, chances are initial shopping will take place at a mattress store.
Thousands of these stores can be found across the United States and tend to be the front end of the industry.
Warehouses, wholesalers, retail shops, and other sorts of small businesses and boutiques are really the only places to go when one is in the market for these products.
Like many retail market stores, mattress store competition can be viciously high when it comes to selling merchandise.
Cutthroat capitalism is the name of the game in this industry as sales and discounts are constantly being shelled out and advertised to consumers who may be moving into a new home, apartment, or dormitory.
Nevertheless, the markup on these items tend to be high as the production costs of mattresses and other bedding products tend to be remarkably low.
As a result, many stores open to attempt to sell the surplus of mattresses that are manufactured each year.
Despite this, many a mattress store can offer you or your loved ones anything they might need.
Mattresses can come in all shapes, sizes, and styles.
Extra features can help support back problems and side aches, isolate abrupt movement from a sleeping partner, or be fitted for waterbed or bunk bed frames.
According to industry trade publications, this industry produces four main products that are generally found in a mattress store: innerspring mattresses, foam mattresses, airbeds, futons and waterbeds.
These are the main products touted, advertised, manufactured, and sold by mattress retailers.
While the revenue of the industry is as high as seven billion dollars (fiscal year 2011), the market has been taking a 2% decline over the last several years.
Despite this, market research analysis suggests that there will be a turnaround within the next five years as the United States economy improves and consumers find themselves with more disposable income.
Like many industries in the United States, the mattress industry is dominated by five large manufacturers, all of which have products found in common retail stores around the country.
Interestingly enough, the industry has a global trade association that supports over 700 members in 50 countries around the world.
This association, the International Sleep Products Association (ISPA), disseminates important industry information to subscribers while maintaining various codes of ethics and standards of which members must subscribe.
Each year annual reports are released which trace and outline industry trends, growth, market research, and other best practices and lessons learned.
As with all products sold within the United States, these items are regulated by the Federal Trade Commission and kept an eye on by various watchdog groups, like Consumer Reports and other trade organizations.
As a result, millions of mattresses are sold each year within the United States, underpinning our economy as the one product we all seem to need and desire: a comfortable night's sleep!
