How to Make Motion Deer Decoys

    • 1). Remove the tail from a whitetail deer at the base. Tie 60 feet of string to the tip of the tail. If possible, remove the tail from the decoy and attach the real tail by pinning it at the base. Moving tails add a sense of realism that can attract surrounding deer. Deer are constantly moving their tails in the wild and notice the behavior on other deer.

    • 2). Tie another 60 feet of string to the base of the neck. Most decoys have a removable head allowing for easy transport. Adjust the head to it can move freely. Buck decoys can be effective for drawing in other bucks and moving the head represents a challenging pose. Moving the head up or down can simulate feeding patterns.

    • 3). Carry the string to your stand or blind and gently tug on the string to move the tail back and forth. Pull on the string to move the head in any direction. Move the tail and head for 10 seconds at intervals of two to three minutes.
