How to Catch Cod Fish
- 1). Take a boat into deeper, cooler water. Do not go further than where your line can hit the bottom, as cod enjoy the surf line. Access to a boat means that you can get to deeper water which gets you access to bigger cod. In a situation where you do not have a boat, find a jetty or pier that you can help you access deeper waters.
- 2). Bait your hook with bait that cod prefer. Mussels, clams, worms, other fish and squid are among the favorites. There are also some artificial lures that are specifically designed to catch cod. You can also combine a lure with some fresh bait.
- 3). Cast your line in an area that has wreckage or other features, like a rocky bottom. Cod like to hide among obstacles. Get your line to go as close to the bottom as possible as cod prefer to stay in colder water, which is usually at the furthest depths.
- 4). Reel in your line slowly. If a fish pulls, jerk the line so that the hook sets into the fish and continue to reel in. If you do not catch a fish, your line will return to you to recast.
- 5). Ice the cod until you are ready to cut and clean for eating. If you are not going to keep it, return it to the ocean immediately.
