Why Crested Geckos Make Good First Exotic Pets

42
If you are considering raising exotic pets and reptiles, a crested gecko might be just what you are looking for.
This lizard takes well to handling and tends to be a hardy creature, so taking care of it is easy.
Not only that, but they are irresistibly cute.
You will likely find yourself spending handling time with yours every day.
One thing that makes them so adorable is their appearance.
Some have bright colorations and markings that make them stand out from the crowd.
These vivid colors may be orange, red or yellow; although, some crested geckos are not so brightly colored and may be brown or gray.
However, they are still delightful.
The markings may be spots or stripes, which may be straight, or tiger-like and broken.
This reptile gets its name from the wonderful crest that covers the tops of the lizard's eyes and resembles eyelashes.
For that reason, some people call it the eyelash gecko.
The crest is made of skin, and it protrudes along the side of the head.
It may extend all the way to the base of the tail.
If this creature were very large, it would look quite frightening.
Fortunately, they do not get quite that large.
They typically get to be around 6-10 inches long, which is just about the right size for handling.
That length includes the tail, which by the way, will break off if the gecko feels threatened.
Unfortunately, while it will keep wiggling for several minutes, it will never grow back.
This is not true for most other geckos, though.
Another thing you are going to find endearing about a crested gecko is the little chirp it makes.
They do not make it all of the time, but they will do it when they want to interact socially.
They also chirp when they become excited or frightened.
Some people might describe it more as a squeak because it is high pitched.
Don't worry, though, it is not disturbing in a way that a loud bird would be: If you were not near the lizard, you might not even hear it.
If you decide to start your reptile collection with a crested gecko, keep in mind that they are nocturnal, so you may not see a lot of activity from one in the daytime.
Nevertheless, they will come out periodically and give you a chance to visit with them.
After one becomes used to you, it may come out more often to see what you are up to.
Who knows, maybe it will even chirp at you.
