My Favourite Films From the Late 20th Century
The first film to make an imprint was "Summer holiday" starring Cliff Richard.
I still remember very clearly sitting with my sisters in our local Odeon cinema mesmerised by the singing, colour and vitality of this movie.
The next film to have a strong impact was "The Sound of Music" How I loved that film.
We even had the record of the music which I would sing along to pretending that I too was starring in the film.
Soon after that, Julie Andrews starred in the film "Mary Poppins".
I was enthralled by the magic of this film.
How could someone float through the air and carry so many large items in her bag? "Tommy" was the cool film to see in my early teens particularly as we were not actually legally old enough to see it.
The music was psychedelic and the filming was surreal but with a complicated story line which was difficult to follow.
For adventure, but with a twist of humour, the Indiana Jones films were hard to beat.
With their good-looking hero, who has imperfections, the films had a successful mixture of fantasy and realism.
Throughout the 1980s and the early 90s the Merchant Ivory collection of films were always a delight to watch..
They were period films such as "A Room With A View", "Heat and Dust" and "Howards End" which all had lavish sets and evocative atmospheres.
Two great British films made in the late 1990s are "Four Weddings and a Funeral" and "Notting Hill".
Both films are modern comedies but with very traditional themes.
These are just a few of my favourite films.
The definition of a good film, for me, is one that can be watched time and time again.
All of the above definitely pass that test!
