Multiple Phone Wiring
- 1). Find the Network Interface Device (NID) outside your house, open it, and unplug the modular connector from its jack inside. Unplugging the connector disconnects power from the telephone company and makes it safe to work on the wires.
- 2). Look for the green and red terminal post inside the NID. A phone line needs two wires to work, and each pair of red and green terminals inside the NID represents one phone line. Loosen the terminal screws on the three pairs of red and green terminal post inside the NID, using a screwdriver.
- 3). Slip one end of a Cat-6 cable through the opening at the bottom of the NID and pull it up by about six inches. Strip off the end of the cable using diagonal pliers to expose the inner wires. Straighten out the twisted inner wires and strip off 1/2-inch from each, using a wire stripper.
- 4). Wrap each wire clockwise around its corresponding terminal post as follows:for line one, blue wire with the white stripe to the red terminal screw and the white wire with blue stripe to the green screw; for line two, attach the white wire with orange stripe to the green screw and the orange wire with white stripe to the red screw; for line three, the white wire with green stripe to the green screw and the green wire with white stripe to the red screw.
- 5). Route the Cat-6 cable to the spot where you plan on sitting a phone. Fasten the Cat-6 cable using cable staples as you go along the route, but do not run the cable alongside electrical power lines to prevent interference.
- 6). Pull the cable slowly out of the wall, and cut it after about 6 inches allowance. Strip 2 inches of its outer cover using diagonal pliers, and strip off 1/2-inch from each inner wire's insulation using a wire stripper.
- 7). Get an RJ-25 jack and loosen the terminal screws at the back of the faceplate. Hook each wire clockwise around its corresponding terminal as follows: for line one, blue wire with white stripes to red terminal screw and white wire with blue stripes to green terminal screw; for line two, use the orange wire with white stripes to yellow terminal screw and white wire with orange stripes to black terminal screw; for line three, use the green wire with white stripes to white terminal screw and white wire with green stripes to blue terminal screw.
- 8). Turn each terminal screw clockwise to tighten each connection, and mount the jack onto the wall telephone box with screws. Plug a multiline phone into the jack. A multiline phone allows you to access all three lines using a single phone, and to instantly switch between lines with the push of a button. Replug the modular connector into its jack inside the NID.
- 9). Lift the handset of your multiline phone, press line one, listen for a dial tone and call someone to check the connection. Do the same procedure for lines two and three.
