How to Remove Lightening Bugs

17
    • 1). Prepare a glass jar to hold the lightning bugs when you trap them. Place a moist tissue inside a glass jar to keep it humid. Use a nail and mallet to pierce the lid of the jar with holes to provide air. A lack of air and humidity can cause the lightning bugs to suffocate and dry out.

    • 2). Turn off the lights in and around your house to avoid deterring the lightning bugs and enable you to capture them. Use a flashlight to help you to attract them. Cover the flashlight with a sheet of plain paper or blue acetate to create blue light and avoid disorienting the fireflies' flash patterns.

    • 3). Observe the flash patterns of the lightning bugs in the area surrounding your house. Imitate the flash patterns of the lightning bugs, such as rhythmically flashing your flashlight directly up and down.

    • 4). When you notice a lightning bug, place an insect net over it and trap it. Deposit the trapped lightning bug in the glass container and secure with the perforated lid. Trap as many as lightning bugs as your glass container can hold.

    • 5). Release the trapped lightning bugs as soon as possible. You can release them in gardens or areas with thick foliage, away from your home and other densely populated areas.
