Japanese Knotweed If you have problems with bigger weeds, like Japanese Knotweed, then it is best to leave the weeding to a professional.
If you dig the weed up, you are actually breaking the canes and splitting them in two.
Just like with worms, if you cut the canes in two, then you have two weeds, instead of the one that you started with.
Now, with Japanese Knotweeds, they could have many canes on them, and if you break all the canes and the knots with your spade then you could end up with thousands of weeds next summer.
