Homemade Christmas Gift Tags
- For cross stitching beginners, it's best to use plastic canvas as your sewing medium. It will keep whatever form you give it without shrinking or wrinkling. More proficient cross stitchers could choose to use needlepoint fabrics stretched over tiny embroidery looms.
Begin your gift tag by cutting the shape you want out of the plastic canvas. Use sharp scissors to cut out small rectangles, squares or circular shapes. Using your canvas needle and some colored thread, stitch the gift recipient's name or initials in the center of the shape. Use an alternate color to fill in the rest of the canvas.
For a guide you could write the name directly onto the canvas in pencil and just sew over it. Add a 3-inch string loop to an upper corner of the tag. You can attach the loop to the bow on your gift. - For small packages create some thumbprint size photo tags with your computer and printer. Choose a picture of the gift recipient from your pictures folder and drop it into a clip art frame. Use a fancy font to type the person's name and add it to the image. Print out the image on card stock. Hole punch the upper left hand corner and string some decorative ribbon through it. Use the ribbon to tie the tag to the present.
Create larger images for larger presents. Slide your printed pictures into small picture frames. Hot glue some ribbon on to the under side of the frame and hang it from the gift's ribbon. - For the fabric tag, stretch a small piece of fabric over a tiny embroidery hoop. You can find these at craft stores just about any time of year. Sew your motif onto the fabric using your favorite holiday colors. You could also add a stitched poinsettia or ornament for a more sophisticated tag. To add this type of tag to the gift, tie some string around the hoops screws and hang it from the ribbon.
