Australian Arowana - A Cheaper Alternative As A Pet Than The Asian Arowana

16
The Australian arowana or pearl arowawa as it is known is found in freshwater areas of northern Australia.
Even though the pearl arowana fish is a relation of the Asian arowawa fish it has had better fortune, as it has not found its way onto the CITES endangered list.
Even thought it is collected by arowana enthusiasts worldwide and is widely fished all over northern Australia, there numbers have remained high.
The background behind the Australian arowana is that it's the most aggressive of the arowana breeds.
They generally grow to between 2-3 foot in length which makes them quite a big fish.
Because the pearl arowana is more common then the asian arowana then as you would expect, it is cheaper in price.
Another plus point is that there's no major regulations or restrictions on the sale or ownership of this breed of arowana.
A very important factor to remember if you are going to buy a pearl arowana is that it has probably been wild caught.
There is very few of this type of fish that are actually tank bred and cared for.
So if you are buying one make sure to check it out well in the pet store before you take it home.
Look at how its acting in the aquarium to see if it looks stressed.
Also have a chat with the staff in the store to see how the arowana is feeding.
Make sure hes eating alright and find out the type of foods that they are using on him.
One last point that is worth pointing out that the pearl arowana is almost 100% carnivorous in its diet.
What this means is that you will have to be feeding the fish live bait so I hope your not squeamish.
Be careful to get the live bait from a reliable source as not to pass disease to your fish.
You can mainly feed them crickets, earthworms, frogs, small fish and small mice but again only from a reliable source.
People always ask they can feed their arowana frogs from there garden but I wouldn't recommend it.
Well I hope I have given you another option in your hunt for an affordable arowana.
Asian arowanas are always what people talk about but they are out of a lot of peoples price range.
The Australian arowana will cost you less in price and to be honest there energy and aggression makes them more fun to watch.
