CCTV Cameras - Proper Care and Maintenance Tips

11
Some of today's devices that many property owners can't seem to live without are CCTV cameras, and for good reasons. Security camera systems provide that certain level of sense of security that no other systems can offer.

With the right kind of CCTV systems, many property owners in Sydney, Australia rest with a peace of mind knowing that they have a set of virtual eyeballs that keep watch over their properties day and night.

But with the ownership of CCTV security systems comes the responsibility of maintaining them for a long lasting use. You see, owning a security system is akin to having a mutual relationship with the equipment; it takes care of you and your property, and it requires your care in return.

No matter how sophisticated your CCTV systems may be, they could wear out after years of use. However, with proper care and maintenance, you can make them work longer than most CCTV system providers would have you expect. And taking care of them doesn't require expensive equipment.

The following are some tips to maintaining CCTV cameras.

An outdoor CCTV camera needs special care and attention, as it is the equipment that is more exposed to the harsh elements of the environment. It's susceptible to dust, moisture, heat and debris. To remove dust from the CCTV camera lens, you can blow it with a burst of compressed air from a blower. Wipe the lens with a cleaning solution, but only use one that is specifically formulated for lenses. Wipe it with a camera lens cloth. Avoid using textured cloth or paper materials to prevent scratching of the lens' surface.
Dip a piece of soft coth or cotton swab into distilled alcohol. Gently rub the coaxial cable with the moist cloth or cotton swab to remove grime and dirt. Avoid rubbing it vigorously. This could loosen the screws of the coaxial cable.
When cleaning the cables that connect the CCTV camera to the monitoring devices, turn off the system and unplug the cables. Use the previous steps to clean the cables. Let them dry for a few minutes before connecting them back to the CCTV camera and monitoring device.
For CCTV cameras that have been in use for over two years, check the power supply box to see if some parts need replacement. It's highly recommended for CCTV systems that have been in use for that long to have their fuse replaced to avoid problems such as short-cuircuiting.
There will be certain hours of the day when CCTV cameras may not be required as much as the other hours. Take the opportunity to quickly reboot the system, especially the monitoring devices. This helps cool down certain components, allowing them to work more efficiently when they're back online.

CCTV cameras and other security systems are delicate devices. If you properly take care of them, they will take care of you for a long time.
