Activities that Improve Your Lung Capacity for Singing Lessons

7
Singing lessons are very important tools for aspiring singers to get the right tips on how to sing properly. There are a lot of things a student can learn from these lessons including voice control and proper breathing. If you are already attending or have attended lessons on singing, you will learn different exercises or practices that will help focus your breathing and improve your voice. Voice teachers are sure to guide you to overcome problems with the way you use your voice.

However, aside from the exercises taught in classes, there are other activities that can be helpful for you as a singer. Yoga, swimming and jogging are only some of the ideal exercises to help you improve your lung capacity. Having strong lungs is important for anyone who wants to become a professional singer.

Yoga

In singing, correct posture is very important. This will help you breathe properly and become more confident when you are on stage performing. There are a lot of poses you can learn from yoga that will help you attain a balanced body posture. Moreover, aside from poses or "asanas", you can also learn about "pranayam" or the practice of controlling your breath. Some breathing exercises you learn from your singing lessons are oftentimes the same breathing exercises done in yoga classes.

Just like in singing, proper breathing is given great amount of attention in yoga. Many yoga poses are aimed at expanding and stretching different muscles in the body, including the abdomen. With yoga, your abdominal muscles become more stable and powerful, which is important in continuous singing practice and performances. Aside from helping your lungs and abdomen gain more stamina, yoga is a holistic activity that can help improve your body and your mind.

Swimming

Swimming and singing are two activities that go together well. Swimming can actually help improve the capacity of your lungs and heart. Any singer or singer wannabes can benefit from swimming because it is a high-intensity aerobic exercise. Swimming helps increase the delivery of oxygen throughout your body. It also helps clear your sinuses which is a must before a performance. It will be best to swim in natural bodies of water like seas, lakes, and rivers, but man-made pools are also fine.

Even voice teachers will recommend students do a few laps in the morning before practice to condition their hearts and lungs. Swimming also tightens your back, stretches your throat, and increases your breathing capacity.

Jogging

Another aerobic activity you can perform to increase your lung capacity is jogging or running. Just like swimming, jogging can help condition your heart and lungs and release energy you need for singing. Jogging can also help increase your endurance which can help you sing better and longer.

There are a lot of other physical activities that can help condition your body for better singing. Pilates, biking, and even martial arts are some other activities which you can incorporate with your singing lessons to further improve your lung capacity and overall stamina.
