The 1962 Ford Econoline is a light-duty pickup truck distinguished by its flat nose. Its lightweight, unibody construction (based on the Falcon), and its in-line six-cylinder engine made it a fuel-efficient work truck. The 1962 Econoline was the second year that Ford offered this pickup truck. - The 1962 Ford Econoline was equipped with a 144-cubic-inch, in-line, six-cylinder engine. This power plant puts out 85 horsepower at 4,200 rpm and generates 138 foot-pounds of torque at 2,000 rpm. It has a one-barrel carburetor, a 3.5-inch bore and an 8.7-inch stroke. The engine could get up to 30 mpg, making it unusually efficient for its time.
- The 1962 Econoline carries two passengers in a cab that is mounted over the front wheels. The engine compartment is situated between and behind the passengers in what is referred to as a "mini cab-over" design. This design allows for a longer bed but causes the truck to sit heavy over its front wheels. The lighter rear end results in inferior traction despite a 165-pound weight Ford placed in the bed of the Econoline.
- The 1962 Econoline was also offered as a cargo van. In addition, this was the first year Ford offered a more powerful, 170-cubic-inch engine as an option for the Econoline. This larger engine produces 101 horsepower at 4,400 rpm and 156 foot-pounds of torque at 2,400 rpm. It has a 2.93-inch stroke and a 3.5-inch bore.
